Explanation of the cover photographs
Vertebral Formula in Red-Crowned Crane (Grus japonensis) and Hooded Crane (Grus monacha)

Vertebral formula of Red-crowned and Hooded cranes, designated as special treasures of Japan, were examined. Number of cervical (C) and thoracic vertebrae (T), vertebrae composing the synsacrum (Sa) and free coccygeal vertebrae (Co) showed various numerical patterns in both cranes. Lateral (Fig. 1) and dorsal (Fig. 2) views of the vertebral column show major types in a Redcrowned (Cs: 17, Ts: 10, Sa: 14 and Cos: 7) and a Hooded crane (Cs: 17, Ts: 10, Sa: 13 and Cos: 7), respectively.
