Decaying toxic wood as sodium supplement for herbivorous mammals in Gabon

A group of Western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) feed on decaying Anthostema aubryanum stump rich in sodium, which lacks in their staple food. Picture was taken in Boutsiana forest in Moukalaba-Doudou National Park, Gabon. Picture was taken by Chieko Ando during the observation of “Groupe Gentil”. A silver back male sit on the bottom and juveniles are seen on the top of the stump.
